In 1999, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) set a 3,800-acre boundary for establishing the Big Muskego Lake State Wildlife Area. The DNR is actively seeking to acquire environmentally significant lands within the project area from willing sellers contingent on available funding.
As of 2013, this wildlife area totaled approximately 750 acres that protect Big Muskego Lake and provide public hunting, fishing, and compatible recreational and educational opportunities.
